V IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Rocciolo October 31, 1918 September 14, 2010 Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine foster-Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; so that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen. |

Joe was born in Boston in 1918 to the late Pasquale and Elvira (Sarcione) Rocciolo and was a life long resident of East Boston. He worked as a Draftsman for many years and was a past member of the Orient Heights Civic Club. Joe devoted a lifetime to the youth of East Boston; mainly in the Heights section. He has served not only as president of both Little League and Pony League, but has worked the trenches as a coach or manager on the field and in the dugouts for many years. Joe has twice saved St. Lazarus from losing its reputation as the oldest Park League representative. The first time was in 1942, when he organized meetings with the big boys from the Saints in Rock's cellar. Then when interest faded in the sixties, he started a youth movement. Working with Vin D'Angelico as a coach, they started a junior eleven. To add color and excitement, Joe was instrumental in getting Al Festa to broadcast the purple and white games. His own athletic abilities were as a left fielder in baseball and was named on many Park Department "All-Star" teams from 1932 to 1937. He was also a member of the Twi-Light Champion Missions at Wood Island Park. Then in 1937 while playing left field for East Boston High, Joe was selected to the Boston Post "All Scholastic Team." Joe has spent 25 years with the St. Lazarus Football Team as backfield coach, equipment manager, publicity and recruiter. He was also in constant contact with players that signed big league contracts having coached Al Morelli (Chicago Cubs), Zeke Zatino (Boston Braves), Bob Stanziani (New York Mets), Tony Congiliaro (Boston Red Sox); also helping Bob Hanson (Milwaukee Brewers), Mike Morelli (Seattle Mariners), Billy Congiliaro (Boston Red Sox) and John Ianelli (Boston Red Sox). Joe later spend much of his time watching East Boston High, Dom Savio and Winthrop High sports teams. Joe passed away peacefully in the Winthrop Place Nursing Center on Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his second-nieces Janis and Doris, and dear friend Richie after a brief illness. He was 91 years of age.
